Bright Future for Univerity Lighting Course It was "lights, camera, action!" at the University of Glamorgan at the beginning of September for the launch of two brand new undergraduate degree courses from the School of Electronics. The new courses, Live Event Technology and Lighting Technology look set to train some of the UK's top dramatic lighting professionals of the future. During the launch, which took place on Tuesday 6th September, one of the campus' largest buildings was illuminated by state-of-the-art lighting technology provided by Stage Electrics, one of the UK's largest technical suppliers. Stage Electrics also provided equipment for the transformation of the Civil Engineering loading bay into a practical demonstration space allowing students to learn and improve their skills in rigging, focusing and lighting design. Truss for this space was sourced from Prolyte, the space being one of the first in Wales to utilise the multipurpose H30V square box truss. Four Prolyft motors also from Prolyte have been installed, enabling students quick and easy access to the rig. The new courses have been developed in consultation with industry practitioners in order to prepare students for work in the sector. The Live Event course will provide students with a high level of technical skills and knowledge combined with creative abilities in live event technology, including sound, lighting design and engineering, as well as event production for theatre, conferences, performances and festivals. The courses specifically prepare students for employment in event management and production companies; broadcast, theatre, entertainment, live performance and the media, as well as self-employment. Course leader Akram Hammoudeh said, "This course is designed to prepare students for careers as lighting technicians and we have worked closely with industry to ensure that our graduates are equipped with all of the necessary skills. Final year students will have the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team working together in a simulated industry environment."
