Gold Medal Plaza

For the Olympic Winter games, which will be held in Turin from February 10th till 26th, Prolyte was asked to develop 3 special delay towers. The assignment for this project came through Italian Prolyte distributor Decima for their client Ital Stage. Prolyte and Ital Stage have cooperated before for large projects.

The towers will be used on what is called “Gold Medal Plaza”, the spot where, during the games, all medal ceremonies will be held. For Gold Medal Plaza, two structures had to be developed. On one side a huge stage, under which the ceremonies will take place on the opposite side three huge towers for delay sound and follow spot platforms.

Ital Stage, partly based on consultancy from Prolyte, has developed the stage. The stage structure is a mix of steel and aluminium. For the middle grid, Prolyte S52ST truss is used. For the main grid B100RV truss will be used, combined with S36R truss, which will act as supporting structure for a huge inflatable on top of the stage. The stage is a circular structure with an overall height of 22,8 m. and a clearance of 17m. The structure has a cantilever of 16 m. at the front, which will be supported S36V truss and by guy-wires attached to the middle tower. A huge video screen of 29 x 10 m. will be hung underneath this grid.

The towers are 21,5 m. high and are built from a double row of B100RV truss, which will be interconnected with doughty clamps. A special top section was developed to withstand the forces within this structure. The tower will have a live load of 5500kg, 3000 kg for the follow spot platforms and 2500 kg for the sound system. The total amount of ballast needed is 16000kg; spread over 4 legs of the base section. The base section was developed by Ital stage in cooperation with Prolyte and constructed in Italy. A steel section in the middle of the tower will support 4 guy-wires for stabilization of the system, which will also be attached to the base section.
