What will change in the way (truss) structures are calculated?
Persons in charge of calculating (truss) structures need to carry out these calculations according to Eurocode 1 and 9.
Here we find significant changes between the old principle of Allowable Stress Design (ASD) and the new principle of Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD).
Does this mean that users will need a static calculation for their structures after the implementation of the Eurocodes?
Yes, as a general rule, all structures need static calculations.
But this is not a change – this rule already applied before the implementation of the Eurocodes.
What about the new factors of safety?
Trusses and structures used to be calculated according to DIN 4113.
In this standard the factors of safety have been inherent in the given allowable material stresses.
Trusses and structures calculated according to the Eurocodes are subject to some changes. The factors of safety are split to the “material side” and the “load side”.
This offers the opportunity for structural engineers to use different factors of safety for different loading situations on the “load side”.
